Wanyeche claims Uganda Open title after Ugandan pair falters on final holes

The 76th Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Golf Open concluded with a dramatic finish as Tanzanian golfer Hawa Wanyeche clinched the coveted title. The victory came after a surprising capitulation by the leading Ugandan pair, Peace Kabasweka and Keisha Kagoro, on the closing holes of the tournament at Uganda Golf Club in Kitante.
For much of the final round, Kabasweka and Kagoro were locked in a tight battle at the top of the leaderboard. Both players held a share of the lead as they approached the 18th tee. However, identical struggles on the final two greens saw them each record a bogey on the par-3 17th and a double-bogey on the 18th, costing them dearly.
Wanyeche, who had been trailing the Ugandan duo, capitalized on their errors. She carded two pars on the final holes to finish with a 54-hole aggregate score of 228 gross. This hard-fought triumph marks a significant milestone for Wanyeche, who had previously come close to winning the title in 2024, only to lose on the final hole.
“So excited, and I am happy,” Wanyeche expressed after receiving the trophy. “It has been long trying but finally, I did it.” She credited her resilience and faith for the victory, noting that she almost didn’t attend the tournament due to financial constraints.
Kabasweka, the defending champion from 2023, was visibly distraught, lamenting a potential distraction on the final hole. Kagoro, a promising young talent, was also left in tears after her maiden quest for the Open gong faltered. Wanyeche’s win makes her the fifth Tanzanian golfer to claim this prestigious title.
