Officials have revealed that UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham engaged in brief message exchanges with someone falsely claiming to be Susie Wiles, the chief of staff to former US President Donald Trump. The communication reportedly occurred before suspicions arose about the legitimacy of the contact.

According to Politico, which first reported the incident, only a handful of messages were exchanged. Sources indicate that once the communication was deemed suspicious, it was promptly reported to the relevant authorities.

Downing Street has maintained a policy of not commenting on national security matters, stating only that they “do not comment on national security matters.”

It is understood that the contact was strictly via messaging, with no actual voice or video conversation taking place between Burnham and the impersonator. The content of the messages was also reportedly not significant.

This incident is not the first time high-profile figures have been targeted by impersonators. The BBC previously reported on an FBI investigation into Susie Wiles’ phone being hacked. At that time, Wiles stated her phone was compromised, and an impersonator used her contact list to message other prominent US officials.

Previously, former Foreign Secretary David Cameron also fell victim to a hoax call in 2024, where the caller posed as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Cameron also exchanged text messages with this impersonator. More recently, in 2022, two government ministers were targeted by an imposter pretending to be Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, an incident attributed by some to Russian “dirty tricks.”
