Adjumani Market Traders Resort to Roadside Garbage Disposal Amidst Collection Woes

Traders at Awindiri Market in Adjumani Town have resorted to an unconventional method of waste disposal, piling garbage onto a road leading into the bustling market. This action stems from the overflowing of the designated garbage collection point, with town authorities reportedly failing to address the mounting waste despite repeated appeals from vendors.

The situation escalated as the garbage accumulated for several days, leading vendors to use the adjacent road as an alternative disposal site. This has resulted in a partial blockage of access to the market, raising significant sanitation concerns for both traders and the public.

Pious Eruaga, the chairperson of the Awindiri Market vendors, stated that he had alerted town authorities about the issue a week prior. He was informed that the garbage collection truck was out of order. “The traders pay market dues and they expect a clean environment. So now the collection point is full, they have decided to dump the garbage on the road,” Eruaga explained.

Adjumani Town Clerk Patrick Eriku Keleture acknowledged the situation, mentioning he was en route to a district meeting to discuss the matter. Similarly, Adjumani Town Council LC III Chairperson Lawrence Mangapi confirmed a meeting was underway to find a resolution and promised further updates.

This standoff highlights ongoing challenges with waste management in Adjumani Town’s busiest market and exposes the council’s reliance on a single garbage collection vehicle. Residents are calling for authorities to prioritize waste management and invest in more robust equipment to prevent future disruptions.
