Amar Dedić Joins Newcastle United for £30m from Benfica

Newcastle United has officially completed the transfer of highly-rated defender Amar Dedić from Benfica, with the deal reportedly valued at around £30 million. Dedić has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Magpies.

The move sees Dedić link up once again with manager Matthias Jaissle, a partnership that previously yielded an Austrian title win at Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. On his 24th birthday, Dedić expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “It’s a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United.” He added, “I’m really happy to be here and can’t wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.”

Reuniting with Jaissle was a significant factor in his decision. “Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well. He knows what I can bring on the pitch and I’m really happy to be playing for him again,” Dedić commented. He also conveyed his anticipation for playing in the Premier League, noting, “Playing Premier League football at St James’ Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere.”

The signing addresses Newcastle’s need for a new right-back, following Kieran Trippier’s departure earlier in the summer. With Tino Livramento still recovering from injury, Dedić could be in line to make his debut in Newcastle’s season opener against Liverpool.

Manager Jaissle praised Dedić’s capabilities, highlighting his “defensive and attacking qualities” and describing him as “athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further.” Dedić brings experience from playing at St James’ Park, having been part of the Benfica team that lost to Newcastle in the Champions League last season.

Although new to the Premier League, Dedić’s impressive statistics in Portugal, particularly his attacking contributions from full-back, suggest he could be a valuable addition to the squad. His versatility and familiarity with Jaissle’s tactics may allow for a quick integration into the team.
