Denis Onyango, a legendary figure in African football, has opened up about his illustrious career, marked by numerous trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns and profound experiences with the Uganda Cranes.
Onyango’s journey with Mamelodi Sundowns was one of perseverance. After returning from loan, he fought his way back into the starting lineup, eventually becoming a cornerstone of the team’s dominance in South African football. He played a crucial role in securing nine league titles and two CAF Champions League crowns for the club, cementing his status as a club icon.
“I don’t own the club. The club has to move on,” Onyango stated, reflecting on his graceful transition to mentoring Ronwen Williams, the new number one. He emphasized the importance of leadership in preparing successors, a philosophy he learned and now imparts.
His international career with the Uganda Cranes was a tapestry of intense emotions. The near-qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, marred by controversy, remains a source of heartbreak. “That’s one game that made me cry,” he admitted, recalling the goalless draw against Kenya that dashed Uganda’s hopes after a 33-year wait.
However, this deep-seated desire for national success eventually bore fruit, with Uganda qualifying for the 2017 and 2019 AFCON tournaments. Onyango also spoke candidly about the players’ strike during the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, attributing it to a “misunderstanding” over bonuses.
After retiring from international duty in 2021, Onyango made a surprising return, not to reclaim his captaincy, but to offer guidance and experience. He prioritized team cohesion, assuring the current captain, Khalid Aucho, that the armband was his.
“I told the coach, if we’re building the next generation, let’s trust Jamal,” he shared, referencing his decision to let goalkeeper Jamal Salim start during a World Cup qualifier, demonstrating his commitment to developing future talent.
