FUFA Steps In to Support Grassroots Football Academies Amidst New Regulations

Uganda’s grassroots football scene, the bedrock of the nation’s soccer talent, is getting a significant boost from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA). Many small academies across the country operate with minimal resources, often lacking basic necessities like proper footballs and team kits. Players at these academies, driven by passion and dreams, frequently train in worn-out gear and mismatched apparel, as exemplified by the Saved Athleticos Sports Academy.
Responding to an appeal for assistance, FUFA recently donated 20 footballs, 18 pairs of boots, and new team kits to Saved Athleticos. This intervention highlights FUFA’s commitment to nurturing talent from the ground up, acknowledging that these academies are crucial for introducing young players to organized football, discipline, and competition.
FUFA Deputy CEO Sheba Ronah Ampaire stated that supporting these communities through football is a core objective for the federation. FUFA Executive Committee member Rogers Mulindwa emphasized that grassroots development is essential for the growth of football in Uganda, stating, “We cannot build football without starting from the grassroots.”
However, the federation’s support comes at a time of significant regulatory changes. The new National Sports Act 2023 and FUFA’s academy framework mandate formal registration, inspection, and licensing for all academies. While these reforms aim to enhance accountability and player development quality, they present a considerable challenge for resource-strapped community academies.
The federation acknowledges this balancing act. The next phase of academy development will need to integrate these new regulations with continued practical support. Ensuring that these grassroots initiatives are not left behind is crucial for Uganda’s footballing future, as these academies are pivotal in shaping the next generation of players.
