Luweero Maize Dealers Protest PRO Industries Amidst Court Order Defiance

Maize dealers in Luweero have defied a court order, continuing their protest against PRO Industries Limited by blocking access to the factory premises. The dealers, operating under Lim Welo General Stores Limited, are demanding payment of an estimated Shs2.6 billion for maize supplied to the company between March and May. This action follows a High Court order issued on Monday, which prohibited the traders and their director, Mr. Isma Mubiru, from trespassing or interfering with the factory’s operations.
The traders claim they delivered around 3,000 tonnes of maize but have not received payment, despite alleged assurances from PRO Industries. They assert that payments were due promptly after the issuance of Local Purchase Orders, citing months of delayed settlements and what they describe as “empty promises.”
Individual traders have expressed significant financial distress, with some facing the risk of losing property due to unpaid loans taken out to finance maize purchases. The dealers also highlighted a rise in maize prices, suggesting they have incurred losses due to the delayed payments.
PRO Industries, however, disputes the claims, stating that a review of supplier accounts revealed inflated figures and significant discrepancies. The company also alleges that weighbridge personnel were threatened to manipulate delivery records. They claim that attempts to reconcile the figures and offers to pay undisputed amounts were rejected by the suppliers.
PRO Industries has expressed a willingness to review documentation but condemns the use of inflated statements, intimidation, and public demonstrations to extract funds. The traders have now appealed for intervention from the Minister for Local Government and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
