Memphis Depay Agrees to Pay Cut, Extends Corinthians Stay

Memphis Depay has agreed to a substantial pay reduction, paving the way for him to extend his contract with Brazilian club Corinthians until 2028. This development follows a period of uncertainty where the Sao Paulo-based team had initially decided against renewing the forward’s deal.

Last week, Depay publicly expressed his disappointment, accusing Corinthians of “unacceptable behaviour” after they rescinded a previously agreed-upon contract extension. The situation stemmed from financial concerns on the club’s part, as they reportedly found it difficult to meet the financial demands for a new agreement.

However, Corinthians president Osmar Stabile confirmed that Depay significantly lowered his financial expectations. “He managed to reduce numbers that his team couldn’t achieve,” Stabile stated, emphasizing that the agreement was reached after considerable effort and a personal meeting with the player.

The 32-year-old Netherlands international has been a key player for Corinthians since joining in 2024, contributing to their victories in the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year. He has scored 20 goals in 79 appearances.

Reports indicate Depay will waive approximately R$21 million (£2.9 million) from the R$75 million (£10.6 million) owed to him. The new deal, valued at R$135 million (£19.1 million) in total, includes provisions for the remaining debt to be paid in installments starting in January 2027. “He made a considerable reduction because of the circumstances, because of his desire to stay, and because Corinthians needed to find a way to pay,” added Stabile, expressing confidence in the club’s ability to afford the new contract.
