Mukono Bridge Collapse Sparks 3-Year Blame Game, Residents Suffer

For almost three years, residents in Nsambwe, Ttakajjunge, and Kikubakima villages within Mukono district have been navigating treacherous conditions following the collapse of a vital bridge. This structural failure has severely impacted daily life, disrupting transportation, access to essential services like schools and health facilities, and hindering local businesses. The lack of an alternative route has forced the community to rely on precarious makeshift crossings, putting students and other road users at significant daily risk.

The situation has been exacerbated by a protracted blame game between Mukono district and Nama sub-county authorities over who holds responsibility for the bridge’s upkeep. A local resident, Ssalongo Waswa Kizito, explained that a foreign national operating Noah’s Ark Children’s Home had maintained the road for years until district technical officials intervened, allegedly demanding payment and halting repairs. He also reported threats from individuals with government-marked motorcycles against anyone attempting to work on the road.

During a recent Nama sub-county council meeting, local councilors denied responsibility, stating the road had historically been under the district’s purview. They expressed willingness to collaborate on temporary solutions while the primary responsibility is clarified, noting the sub-county lacks the resources for major rehabilitation.

However, a deputy speaker indicated the matter had been escalated to the district chairperson, with the district reportedly seeking Shs 15 million for repairs and engaging the same individual who previously maintained the road.

The prolonged neglect has drawn the attention of the state minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahare Atenyi, who has pledged to investigate the bridge’s collapse, the allocation of any funds, and the reasons for its prolonged disrepair. He has called for urgent action from responsible authorities to fix the bridge before his visit, emphasizing that the community should not suffer due to negligence or mismanagement.

Efforts to get official comments from senior Mukono district officials, including the Chief Administrative Officer and the District Engineer, were unsuccessful by press time, leaving the district’s stance on the alleged transfer of responsibility unclear.
