Omutaka Aloysius Nsamba Magandaazi Lubega, the leader of the Ngabi Clan, has made a fervent appeal to his clan members to safeguard their cultural identity by preserving traditional naming conventions. Speaking at a recent gathering with descendants in Jjalamba, Mawokota County, Omutaka Nsamba voiced his concerns about a growing trend where families are deviating from ancestral naming practices.
He specifically highlighted the practice of assigning male names to female children, often to honor their fathers. “A girl should be given a female name, while a boy should be given a male name. It is wrong to give a girl a male name simply because it is her father’s name,” Omutaka Nsamba stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining gender-specific naming traditions.
The clan head warned that the erosion of these traditional names could lead to the gradual disappearance of significant clan names and weaken the transmission of cultural heritage across generations. He stressed the need for younger generations to understand their lineage and place within the broader Buganda Kingdom.
Beyond naming practices, Omutaka Nsamba also urged his descendants to prioritize their children’s education, viewing it as crucial for equipping them with the skills needed for national development. Furthermore, he encouraged families to actively document their clan’s history and share it with younger members, ensuring that their origins and cultural significance are not forgotten.
The gathering also brought to light challenges faced by the clan, including land disputes. Clan members reported individuals attempting to reclaim ancestral land, which hinders development and preservation efforts. Addressing these issues, alongside preserving cultural practices and documenting history, was identified as key to strengthening unity and protecting the Ngabi Clan’s legacy.
