Rakai Residents Await Long-Delayed Opening of Wavamunno Secondary School

In Lwanda Sub-county, Rakai District, the skeletal remains of Wavamunno Secondary School stand as a stark reminder of a deferred promise. Initiated nearly seven years ago by prominent businessman and philanthropist Sir Gordon Wavamunno, the school was envisioned as a vital educational hub for hundreds of children in the area who struggle to access secondary education.

The project, born from Sir Gordon Wavamunno’s connection to the area where his family settled, aimed to combat illiteracy and provide a pathway out of poverty for local youth. The initial excitement surrounding the construction has long since faded, replaced by a persistent sense of disappointment as the buildings remain dormant.

Local leaders and residents lament the stalled project, highlighting the dire need for accessible secondary education in Rakai. Many children complete primary school only to abandon their studies due to the long distances to existing schools and the associated costs. This often leads to early school dropouts, child labor, and early marriages, issues that community elders believe the new school would have significantly mitigated.

“We were extremely happy when construction started because education remains one of the biggest problems in this area,” stated Mr. Charles Muliira, a former sub-county chairperson. “Many children complete Primary Seven, but fail to continue with their studies because the nearest secondary schools are far away.”

Beyond serving local students, the school was expected to stimulate the local economy through job creation and increased economic activity. However, the unfinished structures continue to be a symbol of missed opportunities for both education and development.

Elvis Wavamunno, Sir Gordon’s son, has stated that the project has not been abandoned and that the family remains committed to its completion. He explained that the school is intended as a legacy project, and while preparations are in place, they are carefully planning for the most appropriate and sustainable time to open, ensuring it meets their envisioned educational standards.

As communities in Rakai continue to grapple with educational challenges, the hope remains that Wavamunno Secondary School will eventually open its doors, fulfilling the noble vision of providing quality education and creating a brighter future for the district’s youth.
