Rotary Uganda has launched an appeal for Shs 5 billion to bring a crucial cancer treatment facility to completion. The specialized one-stop cancer centre, located at St Francis Hospital, Nsambya, has been under construction since 2016.

The project, which carries an estimated total cost of Shs 13 billion, is designed to be a state-of-the-art facility equipped with two linear accelerators for radiotherapy. This will significantly improve access to essential cancer treatment for patients in Uganda, reducing the need for costly and difficult travel abroad.

To date, Rotary has successfully raised Shs 8 billion towards the project. The remaining Shs 5 billion is needed to cover the final stages of construction, furnishing, and equipping the centre. Organizers are optimistic that this year’s Rotary Cancer Run will help bridge this funding gap.

Meddie Lutaaya, chairperson of the 2026 Rotary Cancer Run Council, announced plans to mobilize at least 100,000 participants. Their collective contributions are expected to generate the Shs 5 billion required to finalize the superstructure and move towards the critical fitting and furnishing phases.

This year’s 15th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run, scheduled for August 30, 2026, aims not only to raise funds but also to offer renewed hope to families impacted by cancer. The campaign has garnered support from various entities, including Candlelight Property Services, which pledged Shs 20 million and promised additional contributions. The company also intends to aid Ugandans in obtaining accurate land title information, addressing potential difficulties in accessing the Ministry of Lands’ system.
