Shs10 Billion Solar Water Project to Alleviate Sembabule's Water Crisis

Residents of Sembabule District, a region historically affected by drought due to its location in the cattle corridor, are set to benefit from a significant new water infrastructure project. The Shs10 billion solar-powered water system, a collaborative effort between the Ugandan government and the Government of India, is designed to bring relief to approximately 62,049 people across more than 50 villages in the sub-counties of Lugusulu, Mitima, Kikoma, and Mijwala.

For years, communities in Sembabule have struggled with water scarcity, often forced to trek long distances to access water sources that are frequently contaminated and shared with livestock. This situation has exacerbated health concerns and placed a heavy burden on households, particularly women and children. “We have been forced to share the same water with the livestock,” lamented Allen Nabatanzi, a resident of Mitima Village, highlighting the urgent need for safe water.

The new facility utilizes 80 solar panels and booster pumps to draw water from River Kyoja, channeling it through 180km of pipelines to two 100-cubic-meter elevated steel tanks and 21 public stand posts. The project also includes provisions for 90 private connections. The solar power source is expected to ensure a more reliable and cost-effective supply, bypassing challenges associated with inconsistent electricity.

Officially handed over to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) for management on June 27, 2026, the project aims to significantly improve the district’s safe water coverage, which currently stands at a low 36.7 percent, well below the national rural average of 70 percent. District officials, while expressing optimism, have also called for further government investment to expand water supply to cover livestock needs and other underserved areas within the district.
