Uganda Boosts Electricity Access: Over 270,000 Meters Undergo Testing

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) is making significant strides towards its goal of one million new electricity connections across Uganda. A substantial consignment of over 270,000 prepaid electricity meters is presently undergoing rigorous quality testing by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).

This crucial testing phase, managed under the World Bank-supported Electricity Access Scale-Up Project (EASP), ensures that the meters meet stringent national standards for accuracy and performance before being deployed by utility companies such as Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), West Nile Rural Electrification Company (Wenreco), and Kalangala Infrastructure Services (KIS).

Ms. Sylvia Burungi, Connections Manager for EASP, highlighted the importance of UNBS certification. “Ensuring these meters meet required standards is critical before they are installed for customers,” she stated. The ministry has been actively monitoring the testing progress to facilitate the timely distribution of certified meters.

With approximately 235,000 electricity connections already facilitated by the project, the incoming meters are expected to dramatically increase the pace of new connections. An additional 123,000 meters have also been procured and are awaiting UNBS clearance for deployment.

Mr. Robert Mubiru, Project Manager for EASP, confirmed that UEDCL has received 150,000 single-phase prepaid meters, along with necessary connection materials. This influx of equipment positions the EASP to significantly accelerate its implementation.

Eng. Irene Bateebe, Permanent Secretary at MEMD, emphasized that priority will be given to clearing the backlog of customers who have applied for connections but are awaiting materials. As certified meters become available, pending applications will be processed, bringing much-needed electricity to homes and businesses across the country.
