Uganda Mourns Brig. Gad Toko and Christine Kania After Tragic Road Accident

The Ugandan landscape was marked by tragedy on August 18, 2002, with the untimely deaths of former Vice President Brigadier Gad Wilson Toko and Christine Kania, a member of the Constitutional Review Commission. The two perished in a devastating head-on collision at Bulumagi, a stretch of the Kampala-Jinja highway approximately 12 to 13 kilometers from Jinja.

Brigadier Toko, a pioneering military aviator and significant post-independence political figure, was driving his Nissan Patrol towards Jinja to officiate the Club Pilsner Jinja Open Golf Tournament. In a cruel twist of fate, he collided with a hired car carrying Christine Kania, who was traveling in the opposite direction towards Kampala.

The fatal crash, which occurred between 10 am and 11 am, reportedly happened when Toko attempted to overtake a slow-moving truck. Visibility was hampered by exhaust fumes, leading to the catastrophic impact with Kania’s oncoming vehicle. Kania, her driver, and another passenger in her car tragically lost their lives at the scene. Toko sustained severe injuries and succumbed to them while en route to Jinja Hospital.

Brigadier Toko, born in 1943, leaves behind a legacy as one of Uganda’s first military aviators. He was among the initial Ugandans trained in jet fighter operations in the 1960s and notably became the first Ugandan to pilot a Soviet-made MiG fighter jet solo. He later led the Uganda Air Force during the early Idi Amin era, eventually departing after refusing to appoint unqualified individuals as pilots.

Following the 1985 coup, Toko served as the de facto Vice President under General Tito Okello Lutwa and represented the government in crucial peace talks. Post-1986, he played a role in reconciling insurgent groups in the West Nile region with the new government. At the time of his death, he was also the President of the Uganda Golf Union.

Christine Kania, born in 1950, was a respected judicial and public officer, having served as Chief Magistrate and High Court Registrar. Her involvement in the Constitutional Review Commission was vital to examining Uganda’s 1995 Constitution and gathering public input on governance and legal reforms. Despite being paralyzed after a 1976 accident, she continued to build a distinguished career, making significant contributions to Uganda’s legal framework.
