From Barefoot Village Girl to Youth MP: The Inspiring Journey of Mercy Kanyesigye

Mercy Kanyesigye, now a 28-year-old Member of Parliament, embodies a remarkable transformation from her humble beginnings in Lyantonde District. Born in 1998 to rural farmers, her early life was marked by a grueling 10-kilometer barefoot walk to Kempega Primary School daily. This challenging commute, often resulting in punishment for lateness, was fueled by a deep-seated belief that education was the sole escape from a life defined by tradition and poverty.

Her village held different values, where girls were often seen as assets for bride price, and early marriage was common. Kanyesigye witnessed firsthand the plight of young girls forced into unions they weren’t prepared for. This reality, coupled with her parents’ support for her education, solidified her resolve to pursue a different path, refusing to let her value be reduced to livestock.

Despite attending less-resourced schools, Kanyesigye’s academic discipline propelled her through secondary education, eventually earning her a place at Uganda Christian University to study law. The transition was difficult, as she grappled with an inferiority complex stemming from her rural upbringing when compared to peers from elite schools. However, she relied on hard work, prayer, and resilience to excel.

Her decision to study law was deeply personal, inspired by her father’s unresolved land dispute. She vowed to use her legal knowledge to seek the justice he was denied. Balancing her final year at the Law Development Centre with her parliamentary campaign required immense discipline, a trait honed during her challenging childhood.

Politics wasn’t initially on her agenda. A chance opportunity with the National Youth Council led to her serving as Secretary for Legal Affairs from 2020 to 2025. This experience broadened her horizons, building networks across Uganda and preparing her for a larger political role. Although she lost the NRM primaries for Female Youth MP, she ran as an independent and secured victory through direct engagement and honesty with young voters.

As an MP, Kanyesigye aims to tackle unemployment and illiteracy, issues that hinder youth participation in national politics. She plans to champion initiatives like the Youth Capital Venture Fund, advocating for better support for young innovators and entrepreneurs. Her journey from a barefoot village girl to a national legislator highlights the power of perseverance against adversity.
