Nakaseke Police Nab 22 in Wildlife Trafficking Crackdown

Nakaseke District Police have made a significant bust, arresting 22 people suspected of involvement in illegal wildlife trafficking. The operation took place at Mijumwa Trading Centre late Tuesday night, following an intelligence-led patrol that established a snap checkpoint.

Police intercepted a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K, which was carrying the 22 occupants and a variety of items believed to be linked to illegal hunting.

According to ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, the recovered items are extensive. They include hunting nets, spears, pangas, and knives, alongside roots and leaves of unidentified plant species. Substantial quantities of fresh and smoked suspected wild meat were also confiscated.

Further items seized include three pairs of oribi horns (empeewo), five bushbuck (engabi), and porcupine quills (Namunnungu). These findings point towards a sophisticated operation involving the harvesting and potential trade of protected wildlife.

A case of unlawful possession of wildlife species has been registered, and all 22 individuals are currently detained to assist with ongoing investigations. Police indicated that the suspects will be transferred to specialized authorities for prosecution under the relevant Wildlife Act.

This operation is part of a broader effort by the police in the Savannah region to combat illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking.
