Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adonia Ayebare, has outlined an ambitious agenda for Uganda’s diplomatic corps, emphasizing a shift towards “results-oriented” diplomacy. Since taking office approximately a week ago, Ayebare has declared his intention to move beyond traditional diplomatic niceties and focus on achieving concrete outcomes that directly benefit Ugandans.
“I want diplomacy that delivers results for Ugandans,” Ayebare stated, highlighting his commitment to leveraging foreign relations for economic growth. His ministry plans to collaborate closely with foreign missions in Uganda to pinpoint practical opportunities in key sectors such as trade, investment, tourism, education, and employment.
As an example of successful engagement, Ayebare pointed to the upcoming launch of Starlink, a satellite internet service, noting the crucial support from the United States Embassy in attracting the company. This initiative is expected to significantly improve internet accessibility, particularly for small businesses and educational institutions in underserved areas.
The minister also aims to strengthen ties with Caribbean nations, identifying untapped potential in tourism, infrastructure, oil exploration, and technology. He believes Uganda’s skilled workforce can be utilized to negotiate bilateral agreements, opening up decent employment opportunities for Ugandans in these regions.
The recent appointment of a Ugandan honorary consul in Antigua and Barbuda was highlighted as a strategic move to enhance engagement with the Caribbean, especially in light of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) hosted by Uganda. This honorary consul is expected to facilitate opportunities in trade, tourism, and education.
Ayebare cautioned against viewing economic diplomacy as a quick financial fix, describing it as a process that requires sustained effort, research, and patience. He stressed the importance of collaboration with other government bodies like the Ministries of Finance and Tourism to identify promising markets and ensure that diplomatic efforts translate into tangible benefits for the nation.
