Olara Otunnu Pitches UN Secretary-General Vision in New York

Ambassador Olara Otunnu, a seasoned diplomat with extensive international experience, will today present his candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position. The 75-year-old Ugandan statesman is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York, outlining his platform before member states and civil society representatives.

Otunnu, nominated by the Ugandan government on July 24, is one of eight individuals competing for the top UN role. His campaign has received significant support from President Yoweri Museveni, who has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to garner international backing.

His proposed agenda focuses on fostering an “age of hope and faith” by enhancing the UN’s moral standing, streamlining bureaucratic processes, bolstering global peace and security initiatives, and reforming development finance. Otunnu is also expected to discuss his approaches to multilateral diplomacy, institutional governance, climate action, and the regulation of artificial intelligence.

With over four decades of diplomatic service, Otunnu’s background includes roles such as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, President of the UN Security Council, and UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. This extensive experience positions him as a strong contender in the race.

The informal interactive dialogue is a key part of the UN’s transparent and inclusive selection process for its chief. Following this session and a subsequent appearance before the Security Council, the Council will conduct straw polls to recommend a candidate for appointment to a five-year term.
