Mykhailo Fedorov, who was recently removed from his post as Ukraine’s defence minister, has broken his silence by advocating for presidential elections to be held despite the ongoing war with Russia. In a video address, Fedorov stated, “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia,” underscoring Ukraine’s fight for its identity as a free European nation.
Ukraine is currently operating under martial law, a measure that suspends elections. Fedorov’s call is being interpreted by many as the most significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Fedorov, who served as defence minister for only six months before his unexpected dismissal in late July, was known for his efforts to modernize the ministry, combat corruption, and utilize data to enhance front-line performance. His removal has been linked to reported tensions with the army commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was also replaced weeks later following public pressure.
In his video, the 35-year-old Fedorov did not explicitly name President Zelensky but stressed the necessity of a “legal, safe, and realistic mechanism” to resume Ukraine’s democratic processes during the protracted conflict. He also highlighted a “systemic crisis of governance” and pointed to corruption as a detriment to the country’s war efforts.
Following his dismissal, Fedorov was reportedly offered other government positions, including deputy prime minister for military innovation, but indicated he would only return to his former role as defence minister. Prior to his tenure as defence minister, Fedorov, a former minister of digital transformation, established the “IT Army of Ukraine” for cyber-attacks and led successful initiatives like the “Army of Drones” campaign. He also engaged with figures like Elon Musk to restrict Russian satellite usage for military purposes.
President Zelensky has appointed Yevgeniy Khmara, a less prominent intelligence official, as the acting defence minister. Fedorov, in a post after his dismissal, pledged to continue contributing to defeating the enemy through innovation and strategic strength.
