St. Joseph’s SS Naggalama, a school historically renowned for football and alumni like Andy Mwesigwa and David Obua, is making a significant return to the national school sports arena after a decade-long hiatus. The Mukono-based institution recently participated in the National Secondary School Ball Games II, marking a resurgence that has reignited its aspirations for regional and national prominence.
Despite previous years where academics took precedence over sports, the school’s re-engagement has yielded immediate success. The girls’ woodball team clinched a silver medal, while the beach volleyball squad advanced to the semi-finals. These achievements are seen as crucial steps in rebuilding the school’s athletic programs and fostering talent beyond its traditional football strength.
Headteacher Agnes Nsubuga expressed enthusiasm for the renewed focus, stating, “We revived our involvement in national games, and we were able to shine, especially in beach volleyball and woodball.” The school is now actively identifying and nurturing student-athletes, with a strategic plan to develop teams capable of competing at higher levels, including the prestigious East African Games.
Internal competitions, such as inter-house games, are being utilized to scout potential talent, with athletes like beach volleyball MVP Patience Kaluba emerging as prime examples. The school is committed to rebuilding its football teams while also developing squads in basketball, athletics, and table tennis, aiming for sustained success across various disciplines.
Looking ahead, St. Joseph’s SS Naggalama is setting its sights on the Federation of East African Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSA) Games. “Sporting activities are very expensive, but since we came up with a new strategic direction, we have a budget committed to supporting our children to go even to a higher level,” Nsubuga affirmed, underscoring the school’s dedication to investing in its athletes’ potential for future regional triumphs.
