Tupac Murder Trial: Witness 'Mob James' McDonald Refuses to Identify Killer, Cites Loyalty

Thirty years after the unsolved murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, accused of orchestrating the fatal 1996 shooting, has entered a new phase with testimonies from associates.

On the second day of the proceedings, James “Mob James” McDonald, a former member of Shakur’s entourage and an enforcer for Death Row Records, took the stand. McDonald exhibited significant resistance to answering questions, particularly those asking him to identify those responsible for Shakur’s death.

McDonald stated he was compelled to testify under threat of contempt of court. When pressed by Davis’s defense attorney to identify the shooter, McDonald pointed towards Davis and declared, “I’m not going to send him to prison, you are.” He expressed a strong reluctance to participate in sending Davis to jail, despite acknowledging they were not friends.

“You’re asking me questions that can hurt him,” McDonald told the attorney, visibly agitated. He explained that while he was not present during the shooting, information quickly circulated within Shakur’s circle about who was responsible. McDonald alluded to a “gang war” and a desire for revenge against Orlando Anderson and others involved.

Reggie Wright Jr., another member of Shakur’s security detail who later became general manager of Death Row Records, also testified. Davis’s defense has suggested Wright might be a person of interest. The trial continues, fueled by recent public statements from Davis himself, though he has since attempted to distance himself from details of his alleged involvement.

This case, seeking to resolve one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries, highlights the complex codes of loyalty and distrust that characterized the era.
