The ongoing Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise in Wakiso District is approaching its conclusion, with 280 applicants having been confirmed as successful so far. The six-day exercise has been assessing candidates from various constituencies and municipalities within the district.
According to Captain David Kamya Kiwanuka, the Public Information Officer for UPDF Team Two, the recruitment drive has attracted a substantial number of applicants. However, many were disqualified due to issues such as discrepancies in academic documents, failing to meet physical fitness standards, or pre-existing medical conditions.
Of the 280 successful recruits, Captain Kamya detailed the breakdown: 121 from Makindye-Ssabagabo and Entebbe Municipality, 54 from Busiro North and Busiro South, 50 from Busiro East, and 55 from Nansana Municipality. This exercise is part of a larger national recruitment effort aiming to enlist 10,400 individuals for both regular and professional soldier roles.
Captain Kamya emphasized that the recruitment process has been conducted with integrity, describing it as free and fair with no reported cases of bribery. He also highlighted the success of the UPDF’s online recruitment system, which has streamlined the process and reduced opportunities for corruption by managing applications up to the physical verification stage.
He encouraged those who did not make the cut this time not to be discouraged, urging them to participate in future recruitment drives. Following Wakiso, the UPDF recruitment is expected to move to Mukono District.
