US Criticizes Israeli Airstrikes on Syrian Airbase as 'Unnecessary Escalation'

The United States has issued a strong statement condemning Israeli airstrikes on the Abu Duhur military airbase in Syria, describing the action as an “unnecessary escalation” that undermines regional stability.

Syrian state television reported that eight airstrikes targeted the airbase’s runway and storage facilities on Tuesday. While no casualties were reported, both Syria and Turkey have voiced their disapproval of the attacks, with Damascus calling them an “unjustified act of aggression.”

Israel, without directly commenting on the strikes, stated that Syria was “on the verge of breaching” a security status quo. Jerusalem alleged that Damascus had permitted Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase near Aleppo, which Israel views with suspicion.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria and Iraq, reiterated the US stance on social media, emphasizing that the strikes did not contribute to peace. Turkey’s Communications Directorate refuted Israel’s claims, stating that they were an attempt to legitimize “unlawful airstrikes targeting Syria’s sovereignty.”

The Abu Duhur airbase, located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, has been largely non-operational as a military airfield since 2013. It was captured by rebel forces in late 2024. Syria has been in the process of rebuilding its military infrastructure following years of conflict.

US officials have indicated a willingness to facilitate diplomatic discussions between the involved parties to address “kinetic frustrations” and promote de-escalation.
