Witness claims he used fake company, $5 million offer to ensnare Besigye

During the ongoing treason trial of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prosecution witness, Andy Wilson Orlando, has detailed his alleged role in a sting operation. Orlando, who identifies as British-American, testified that he created a fictitious company and invented associates to gain Besigye’s trust.

Orlando told the court that he presented himself as a potential financier, offering a sum of $5 million to support Besigye’s group. This offer was allegedly part of a plan to provide weapons, including hand grenades, and technical assistance for activities, which included establishing a training camp in Kisumu, Kenya. Orlando claims he deliberately withheld the promised support, causing the planned training to falter.

Further testimony outlined meetings in Geneva and Athens where Orlando engaged with Besigye and an associate, Joe Wakayima. The witness stated he equipped his own apartment with recording devices, which is why he insisted on meetings away from Besigye’s residence. During these discussions, Orlando claims Besigye indicated support from senior military officers.

The witness also recounted alleged plans for a drone attack targeting President Yoweri Museveni after the proposed training. Discussions reportedly centered on who would claim responsibility for such an attack, with Besigye suggesting attribution to the Allied Democratic Forces to avoid negative public perception.

Orlando stated that the promised $5 million was to be deposited in a Dubai bank, with Besigye scheduled to meet representatives of the imaginary company there. The witness also testified to repeatedly bringing up the name of politician Bobi Wine in his conversations with Besigye, who reportedly dismissed Kyagulanyi’s political influence. Orlando confirmed that all his interactions were recorded.

Dr. Besigye, who has been hospitalized, was absent from the court proceedings. His co-accused were present as the prosecution continues to present its case.
