Dozens Perish as Boat Capsizes in Northwestern Nigeria

Tragedy struck in Sokoto state, northwestern Nigeria, when a boat carrying over 70 passengers capsized, leading to the deaths of at least 46 people. Officials confirmed that the majority of those on board were children.

The police spokesperson, Ahmad Rufai, reported that 46 bodies had been recovered near Gorau in Gorony. While 16 individuals were rescued alive, 15 people remain unaccounted for.

Access to the accident site is reportedly difficult, complicating the rescue and recovery efforts. Security agencies and emergency services are en route to the remote location.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the passengers were likely farm owners and laborers heading to work on a rice harvest. One witness described seeing approximately 50 bodies prepared for burial at a community mosque.

This incident highlights the persistent dangers of boat travel in Nigeria. Overcrowding, poorly maintained vessels, and lax enforcement of safety regulations are frequently cited as causes of such accidents. This year alone has seen other fatal boat incidents, including drownings in Jigawa and Yobe states, and a major capsize on the River Niger in December 2024 that claimed 54 lives.

Despite recommendations for safer boats, life jackets, and better regulation of water transport, these measures are often not fully implemented or enforced. For many rural Nigerians, rivers remain a crucial, albeit hazardous, mode of transportation due to inadequate road infrastructure.
