Euro Gold has officially commenced operations for a new small-scale gold mining project in Yumbe District, marking a significant step towards formalizing artisanal and small-scale mining in Uganda’s West Nile region. The project aims to tap into the area’s gold deposits and enhance local economic potential.
The launch event saw participation from government officials, industry stakeholders, and community representatives. Phiona Nyamutoro, the State Minister for Mineral Development, emphasized that the project aligns with the government’s Fourth National Development Plan, which prioritizes the growth of Uganda’s mineral sector. She highlighted Yumbe and Zombo districts as areas rich in gold and urged Euro Gold to adhere to legal frameworks, ensuring that the local communities directly benefit from the mining activities.
Minister Nyamutoro also encouraged the company to prioritize job creation, offer internship opportunities, and foster community support. She indicated a vision for Euro Gold to transition from small-scale to medium and large-scale operations over time. The minister strongly warned against illegal mining practices, stating the government’s commitment to shutting down unlicensed operations and improving safety, insurance, and healthcare provisions for all miners.
Ben Feni, CEO of Euro Gold, shared that the company undertook extensive geological surveys and exploration for over two years before securing its mining grounds, which span approximately 79 square kilometers across West Nile, with Yumbe as the initial operational site. The company plans to produce a minimum of 20 kilograms of gold per week and intends to establish a processing plant to ensure better mineral traceability, accountability, and value addition. “We are going to build our nation,” Feni stated.
The Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners, through its CEO Assimwe Kenneth, welcomed the formalization aspect of the project, noting its importance for improving working conditions and accountability. Assimwe urged miners to prioritize education for children, use personal protective equipment, and access insurance schemes. The Mineral Police Unit also reiterated its stance against illegal mining and smuggling, reporting the closure of over 15 illegal mining sites this year and expressing concern over fatalities at unregulated sites.
Grace Nakku from the Office of the Commissioner, Minerals and Energy Department, stressed the importance of responsible mining for attracting investment and developing the sector. She encouraged Euro Gold to expand its operations while continuing to support artisanal miners and reminded all stakeholders that mining sites are restricted to individuals aged 18 and above.
The launch of Euro Gold’s project is a key part of the government’s strategy to integrate the artisanal and small-scale mining sector into the formal economy, enhance safety, improve mineral traceability, and attract more investment, ultimately contributing to the development of Uganda’s gold value chain.
