Imran Khan Hospitalized Amidst Health Concerns from Prison

Jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been admitted to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. The transfer from Adiala jail was conducted under tight security measures, complying with a recent directive from a three-judge Supreme Court panel.

The court mandated that the cricketer-turned-politician receive medical attention within 48 hours, emphasizing the obligation to safeguard the health and dignity of prisoners.

Khan, who has been imprisoned since 2023 on corruption charges he claims are politically motivated, has reportedly been experiencing various health issues. His legal team has voiced concerns that he has been unable to access adequate specialist medical care, citing issues such as deteriorating eyesight.

Previously, Khan’s lawyers had alleged that prison authorities had not addressed his significant vision loss, a claim disputed by the government. The Supreme Court’s order explicitly mentioned the involvement of an eye specialist in his treatment.

Supporters of Khan and his political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf, have been cautioned against gathering outside the hospital to avoid any breach of the court’s order.

Khan, who also captained Pakistan’s national cricket team, served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. He faces numerous charges, including those related to leaking state secrets and selling state gifts, all of which he maintains are politically fabricated.

His imprisonment, along with that of his wife, has led to significant public protests and a subsequent government crackdown. Despite his incarceration, Khan remains a prominent political figure in Pakistan.
