Katikkiro Mayiga Urges KCCA to Safeguard Buganda's Heritage in Kampala's Growth

The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has emphasized the critical need for the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to ensure that the city’s rapid development does not overshadow its deep historical ties to the Buganda Kingdom.

During a recent meeting with KCCA officials at Bulange Mengo, Mayiga proposed that Kampala’s evolving infrastructure and public spaces should actively reflect its historical narrative. He specifically suggested the creation of a distinctive symbol that embodies the story of Kampala and its origins within Buganda, highlighting that Kampala was historically the seat of the Buganda Kingdom before becoming the national capital of Uganda.

Mayiga acknowledged the challenges faced by KCCA leadership but stressed the importance of commitment to public service delivery. He commended the authority for recent road upgrades and market constructions, recognizing them as positive signs of progress. However, he cautioned against implementing new trade orders in a way that could disadvantage vendors, advocating for organized spaces and clear transition periods.

Further, the Katikkiro urged KCCA to prioritize public transportation, such as trains and buses, as a means to alleviate traffic congestion from private vehicles. He also supported KCCA’s ‘Weyonje’ campaign and National Cleaning Day, advising that adequate preparation, including the availability of resources like garbage trucks and clear operational guidelines, is essential for their success.

KCCA Executive Director, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, affirmed the authority’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Buganda Kingdom, acknowledging Kampala’s location within the kingdom and the necessity of their collaboration for effective city governance. Kampala Lord Mayor, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, echoed this sentiment, stressing that cooperation between KCCA and Buganda is vital for the city’s development and the preservation of its unique identity. He also called for city leaders’ involvement in decisions regarding the capital’s future relocation or significant governmental shifts.
