Police in Kisoro District, working with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, have apprehended two prominent local politicians on charges of corruption and abuse of office. The arrested officials are Kisoro District Council Speaker Amos Hakizimana and LCV Councillor John Mfitumukiza.

Authorities allege that Hakizimana, who represents Mulora Sub-county, and Mfitumukiza, the Councillor for Nyarusiza Sub-county, used their positions to extort money from individuals seeking employment within the district. These alleged offenses are reported to have occurred in 2025.

The suspects are currently being held at Kisoro Central Police Station as investigations continue. Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the arrests and the nature of the allegations.

This latest action is part of a broader anti-corruption initiative in the district. Just last week, the Chairperson of the Kisoro District Service Commission, Erastus Nshaka, and local businessman Aliphose Muhanika were arrested on similar charges. They are accused of soliciting a bribe of Shs5,000,000 from a job applicant.

The police have forwarded the case files for the earlier arrests to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review. If the DPP consents to the findings, the accused individuals will face court proceedings. The recent arrests underscore a heightened focus on combating corruption within local government structures in Kisoro.
