Major Western Powers Condemn Israel's West Bank Settlement Expansion

Israel’s recent move to approve tenders for approximately 1,200 settlement homes in the strategically vital E1 region of the occupied West Bank has drawn sharp criticism from key Western allies. In a unified statement, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada have labeled the project “unacceptable” and demanded that Israel “retract the plans immediately.”

International law considers all Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal. The E1 plan, located east of Jerusalem, has been particularly contentious for decades due to its potential to bisect the West Bank and isolate East Jerusalem, thereby severely undermining prospects for a two-state solution.

The joint statement highlighted the grave concern given the current “instability in the West Bank with unprecedented levels of violence by settlers against civilians, and serious restrictions on the Palestinian economy.” The allies warned that the E1 development not only moves further away from peace but also damages Israel’s international standing.

This condemnation echoes sentiments from the UN Secretary-General and Belgium’s foreign minister, who have also voiced concerns about the E1 plan’s impact on a contiguous Palestinian state. Despite Israeli court challenges and opposition from peace groups, the Israeli housing ministry has proceeded with issuing tenders for over 1,200 units.

The E1 area covers about 12 square kilometers between East Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement. Critics, including Palestinian groups and Israeli peace advocates, argue that its construction would make a viable Palestinian state practically impossible, by fragmenting Palestinian territory and hindering the development of a connected urban area.
