Olara Otunnu Advocates for UN Reform and Moral Authority Restoration

As the race to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres heats up, one of the eight candidates, Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu, has made a strong case for a revitalized United Nations.

Speaking at an informal dialogue with UN member states and civil society groups, Otunnu stressed that reform is not merely an option but a critical necessity. He warned that without significant changes, the world body faces a “grave risk” and cannot afford to maintain the status quo.

Drawing inspiration from the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, Otunnu articulated a vision for the UN to actively bridge global divisions, promoting love over hatred, pardon over injury, faith over doubt, hope over despair, light over darkness, and joy over sadness.

His remarks come as the UN grapples with declining stature and faces pressure to address criticisms of a bloated bureaucracy and agency duplication. Otunnu, a former UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, is the oldest candidate at 75.

The selection process for Guterres’ successor is underway, with a second straw poll among Security Council members scheduled. The process has seen former Costa Rican Vice President Rebeca Grynspan emerge as an early frontrunner, though multiple rounds of voting are anticipated. The key challenge remains securing consensus among the five permanent members of the Security Council, whose divergent worldviews could lead to vetoes.
