Police Disperse Kyebando Protest Over Disputed Village Election Results

Tensions ran high in Kyebando, Mumyuka Sub-County, Wakiso District, on Wednesday as residents took to the streets to protest the outcome of a recent village chairperson election. The demonstrators openly rejected the victory of Richard Mwanje, alleging that his win was illegitimate and the result of electoral fraud.

The situation escalated when a group of agitated residents forced their way into an office they identified as belonging to the disputed chairperson. They reportedly removed items from the premises and demanded that anyone inside vacate the area.

Upon arrival, police attempted to de-escalate the situation, ordering the protesters to leave the office and disperse. However, the confrontation intensified as some residents accused the law enforcement officers of corruption and colluding with those they believed had manipulated the election results.

In response to the escalating unrest, police fired shots into the air and onto the ground, successfully forcing the crowd to disperse. Despite the police intervention, many residents vowed not to recognize Mwanje as their leader, insisting they would continue their fight for justice and a fair electoral process.

The incident concluded with several arrests as authorities worked to regain control of the area.
