Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are understood to be planning a significant move, relocating from their residence in the United States back to the United Kingdom before the end of August. This potential return, initially reported by The Sun and The Daily Telegraph, would see the couple and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, settling into a private home outside of London.
Sources indicate that the couple’s children are scheduled to begin attending a British school in September, marking a notable shift for the family. King Charles III was reportedly informed of the Sussexes’ plans on Sunday. While the King welcomes the opportunity to see his son and grandchildren more often in a personal capacity, it is understood he was unaware of the move until recently.
This development comes after the Sussexes stepped back from their royal duties in early 2020, eventually settling in California. Despite strained family relations in recent years, the couple and their children visited the King at his Highgrove home in July, though the move was not discussed during that visit. Their official status is expected to remain unchanged, with no indication of them resuming roles as working royals.
Security concerns have been a long-standing point of contention for Prince Harry, who has previously cited safety worries as a reason for not bringing his family to the UK. Last year, he lost a legal challenge regarding the level of security provided to him and his family after ceasing to be a working royal. The Home Office has stated that decisions on royal security are handled by a specific committee and described the UK’s system as “rigorous and proportionate.”
The impending move occurs as Prince Harry continues to promote the Invictus Games, which will be hosted in Birmingham next year. His presence in the UK around the event is seen as positive by organizers. The couple’s last visit to the UK together was in September 2022 for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
This news follows a period of legal action by Prince Harry against Associated Newspapers, publishers of The Mail on Sunday and the Daily Mail, concerning alleged unlawful methods of information gathering, which the publisher denies.
