Trump Warns of 'Tremendous Economic Consequences' for Countries Aiding Iran

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning, asserting that the United States will impose “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” on any country that supports or engages in commerce with Iran. This declaration, made in all capital letters on Truth Social, signaled the initiation of what he termed “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country!”

Trump’s forceful statement comes as a 60-day ceasefire with Iran has expired, with no clear diplomatic or military resolution in sight for the ongoing conflict. The president’s move appears to be an escalation of the pressure campaign known as Operation Economic Fury, which was launched in April to sanction foreign financial institutions and businesses dealing with Tehran.

He explicitly stated that “ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.” While Trump did not detail the specific penalties, he called for an immediate cessation of activities such as oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, and the use of front companies, directing his message towards those he believes are aiding Iran.

This development follows the United Arab Emirates’ announcement to sever all financial and economic ties with Iran, prompted by a new missile threat. The UAE’s defense ministry reported detecting ballistic missiles launched from Iran targeting maritime traffic.

While China was not directly named, it remains a significant player as a major purchaser of Iranian oil. The US has previously sanctioned Chinese “teapot refineries.” The Iranian armed forces have warned neighboring Gulf countries against assisting the US military, framing such aid as collusion.

This aggressive stance aligns with recent statements from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who indicated that the US would soon implement unprecedented economic isolation against Iran. The broader strategy under Operation Economic Fury aims to dismantle Iran’s revenue streams through sanctions and the disruption of international business dealings. The conflict has already impacted global trade routes, notably the vital Strait of Hormuz.
