Uganda Launches 100-Day Operation Against Unsafe Taxis in Kampala

The Ugandan government has launched a rigorous 100-day operation aimed at removing unroadworthy and dangerous commuter taxis from the roads of Greater Kampala. Minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama, announced the initiative, known as ‘Operation Ganyegenya,’ emphasizing that public safety will no longer be compromised by political considerations or threats of strikes.

During a press conference in Kampala, Byamukama highlighted the urgent need for regulation in the transport sector to prevent fatal road crashes. He described disturbing scenes of mechanical disrepair, including torn seats held together with makeshift materials, doors secured with tape, and steering wheels bound with ropes. These substandard vehicles pose a significant risk to passengers, conductors, drivers, and other road users.

Byamukama stated that the operation will specifically target taxis that are beyond repair, often referred to as ‘Kinyegenya’ or ‘Gaganyaganya.’ He clarified that well-maintained vehicles, including newer models, will not be affected as long as they meet basic mechanical standards.

The Minister acknowledged past challenges, where attempts to regulate the taxi sector were often halted due to resistance from operators, including threats of widespread strikes or political backlash, especially during election cycles. However, he firmly declared that the government will not back down this time.

“We cannot continue putting people’s lives at risk at the expense of votes, at the expense of strikes,” Byamukama asserted. The government is prepared to face any opposition and has stated that there is no room for negotiation on this matter, prioritizing the lives and safety of Ugandans. The operation has been delegated to the Uganda Police Force for strict enforcement.
