CN Sugar Factory Set for Official Opening Amidst Licensing Delays

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has announced that the CN Sugar factory in Kijonjo Village, Kasaali Sub-county, Kyotera District, is slated for an official opening on August 29.

This directive comes as the sugar factory has yet to receive a formal license from the Uganda National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). The factory’s operations have been a subject of concern for local communities and environmental advocates who have raised questions about its potential impact on the environment and local livelihoods.

The Prime Minister’s office has been monitoring the situation, following directives from President Yoweri Museveni to oversee the factory’s establishment. However, the lack of a NEMA license indicates that the factory has not yet met the required environmental standards and protocols for operation.

Sources indicate that the delay in licensing is due to outstanding environmental and social impact assessments. Local leaders and residents have previously petitioned relevant authorities, citing inadequate consultations and potential risks to water sources and agricultural land.

The official opening, as announced by the Prime Minister, suggests an expedited process, potentially bypassing some of the standard regulatory procedures. This has raised further concerns among stakeholders who are calling for transparency and adherence to environmental laws before the factory commences full-scale operations.
