Guinea-Bissau Opposition Goes Underground After Rapper's Killing

The violent death of Vigario Luis Balanta, a prominent Guinean rapper and opposition figure, has sent shockwaves through the country’s political landscape and driven his movement underground. Balanta, known for his music critiquing poverty and political unrest, was beaten to death in March, with his body discovered outside the capital.

His wife, Dulce, had urged him to be more cautious, fearing for his safety. “I was constantly asking him to lie low, so it wouldn’t reach this point,” she recounted, haunted by the memory of discovering his body.

Balanta founded the Po’ di Terra movement in 2023, aiming to give voice to the frustrations of young Guineans. Following a military takeover in November, which thwarted a scheduled election, authorities tightened their grip, arresting opposition figures and restricting dissent.

Despite the crackdown, Balanta continued to speak out, denouncing the military regime. His activism, combined with his music, made him a powerful symbol for change. After his death, tributes poured in from artists, but the movement’s new leadership has opted for secrecy.

“We reached the conclusion that any person in Guinea-Bissau succeeding Vigario would run serious risks,” stated Nado da Cunha, Po’ di Terra’s current leader, who operates from Brazil. The inner circle communicates via encrypted channels to strategize and maintain momentum for their goal: advocating for political freedoms and the rule of law.

Despite the risks and restrictions, opposition figures like presidential contender Fernando Dias have vowed to continue their fight for democracy, inspired by Balanta’s courage. The military government plans to hold a constitutional referendum and general elections in late 2026, but the climate of fear and repression, underscored by Balanta’s killing, remains a significant challenge. Some radio stations have even shied away from playing his music for fear of reprisal.
