IGP Byakagaba Inspects Nsambya Barracks, Lauds K9 Unit

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Nsambya Police Barracks on August 17, as part of an ongoing effort to enhance the Uganda Police Force’s morale and operational effectiveness.

During his visit, Byakagaba acknowledged the police medical department’s service to the local civilian population. He also shared plans aimed at improving the welfare of police officers and upgrading the barracks’ educational facilities.

Observing the current state of the barracks, the IGP pledged improvements to accommodation and the construction of a perimeter fence to enhance security. The tour, which included senior officials like AIGP Dr Moses Byaruhanga and Undersecretary Aggrey Wunyi, focused on the welfare of officers and their families.

Byakagaba emphasized Nsambya Barracks’ strategic importance, stating it serves as a vital hub for personnel housing and deployment within the Kampala Metropolitan Police area.

The highlight of the inspection was the IGP’s tour of the Police K9 Unit headquarters. Led by Commissioner of Police Dr Martin Mugume, the unit’s breeding and training programs deeply impressed Byakagaba, who praised their professionalism and critical role in combating crime.

He noted that the K9 unit is instrumental in detecting explosives and contraband, significantly strengthening investigations and improving the quality of evidence presented in court. Byakagaba referred to the highly trained dogs as a “force multiplier” in the pursuit of justice.

The IGP concluded by reaffirming the force’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the barracks residents and ensuring their welfare aligns with the operational standards expected of them.
