Japan Carries Out First Execution in Over a Year

Japan has resumed capital punishment with the execution of Sunao Takami, 58, who was responsible for a deadly arson attack. In 2009, Takami set fire to a pachinko gaming parlor in Osaka after dousing it with gasoline, resulting in the deaths of four patrons and one employee.

A judicial panel rejected arguments that Takami was mentally unsound at the time of the crime, leading to his sentencing in 2011.

This execution is the first to occur under the current administration and the first in over a year. The previous execution in Japan was that of Takahiro Shiraishi, known as the “Twitter killer,” in June of the previous year, who was convicted of murdering and dismembering nine individuals.

Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi confirmed the execution, stating it followed “careful and thorough consideration.”

Japan, alongside the United States, remains one of the few G7 nations to retain the death penalty. The practice in Japan involves notifying death row inmates of their impending execution only a few hours beforehand.

Public opinion in Japan generally shows strong support for capital punishment. However, human rights organizations have raised concerns regarding the lengthy periods death row inmates spend in solitary confinement and the lack of transparency surrounding the scheduling of executions.
