The historic Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site and crucial cultural landmark for the Buganda Kingdom, has seen its comprehensive restoration works officially concluded. The final phase of the restoration was marked by a traditional ceremony where the last grass was cut at the entrance of Muzibwazaalampanga, signifying the full rehabilitation of this significant royal structure.
This milestone event was graced by key figures, including Nnaalinnya Beatrice Namikka, who oversees the Tombs, and Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, Patrick Luwagga Mugumbule. Both expressed gratitude for the successful completion of the multi-year project. The restoration, which has spanned over a decade, faced complex challenges due to the historical and cultural significance of the site.
Buganda’s Minister of Culture and Traditions, Dr. Anthony Wamala, acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Ugandan Government and UNESCO, highlighting their crucial role in facilitating the restoration process. “We thank the Government and UNESCO for the good cooperation on this project, which has taken more than 10 years to complete,” he stated. The focus now shifts to the royal household for the official inauguration.
While restoration activities, including the completion of Muzibwazaalampanga, were previously announced in late 2025, this recent ceremony, conducted in strict adherence to Buganda’s customs, formally signifies the end of the restoration phase. The presence of princes, princesses, and various royal officials underscored the importance of the occasion.
The completion of this ambitious restoration project represents a significant achievement in preserving the heritage of the Kasubi Tombs for future generations. The site holds immense cultural and historical value, serving as a repository of Buganda’s past and traditions.
