Mpigi District is set to significantly boost its tourism sector by focusing on the promotion and development of its rich cultural and historical sites. The initiative aims to attract both domestic and international visitors, thereby preserving Uganda’s heritage and creating economic opportunities for local communities.

This commitment was underscored during the recent launch of a reception and cultural museum at the Ndiga clan’s Kibuuka Omumbaale heritage site in Mawokota. This site is historically significant, linked to Kibuuka Omumbaale, a renowned warrior from Buganda’s past, and boasts ancient trees believed to be around 900 years old with unique, almost musical, features.

The district, which is home to over 30 tourist attractions including the Equator, sees great potential in sites like Kibuuka Omumbaale. Officials believe that increased investment and promotion can lead to a substantial rise in visitor numbers, job creation, and revenue generation for the region.

The Ndiga clan has been actively developing the site to safeguard its history and promote it as a tourist destination. The newly established museum showcases artifacts and information connected to Kibuuka Omumbaale and the clan’s heritage. The clan envisions Kibuuka Omumbaale becoming an internationally recognized tourist destination, with initial plans for development escalating to an ambitious Shs15 trillion.

Government representatives have lauded the initiative, pledging support for cultural tourism. They have encouraged clans to document their histories and create multimedia content to reach a wider audience. Mpigi District’s tourism calendar now features Kibuuka Omumbaale prominently, with a dedicated budget allocation planned for its development each quarter.

This strategic focus on cultural heritage is expected not only to diversify Mpigi’s tourism appeal but also to foster a deeper appreciation for Uganda’s history and traditions among future generations. The effort serves as a model for other clans to invest in and preserve their own unique cultural institutions.
