Mukono Bridge Collapse Strands Residents Amidst Official Blame Game

Residents in Nsambwe, Ttakajjunge, and Kikubakima villages, Mukono District, are facing significant hardship following the collapse of a crucial bridge nearly three weeks ago. The structural failure has disrupted access to schools, health facilities, and markets, forcing many to use a dangerous makeshift crossing over the river.

The situation is exacerbated by a disagreement between Mukono District and Nama Sub-county officials regarding who is accountable for the road’s upkeep. This bureaucratic deadlock is leaving the community vulnerable, with children and daily commuters exposed to risks.

Local reports indicate that a foreign national, identified as Mr. Peter Builendijk, popularly known as Papa, had previously maintained the road for about a decade. His efforts were reportedly halted after Mukono District officials imposed conditions, and subsequent attempts to resume repairs were blocked, leading to confusion and frustration among residents.

Some residents accuse local leaders of ignoring their plight. While some sub-county councillors have denied responsibility, suggesting the road falls under district jurisdiction, they acknowledge the sub-county’s limited resources for major repairs. They are appealing for community and factory support for temporary fixes.

Mukono District officials stated that the matter has been escalated and that Shs15 million is being sought for repairs. They claimed to have negotiated with Mr. Builendijk to resume work, with resident assistance. However, the district’s definitive stance on the road’s maintenance responsibility remained unclear at the time of reporting, highlighting broader issues of accountability in local infrastructure management.
