President Yoweri Museveni has lauded a cohort of 19 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) General Officers who are retiring, recognizing their substantial contributions to the nation’s peace and security.
Speaking from State House, Entebbe, President Museveni extended his congratulations to the officers, acknowledging their role in fostering the UPDF’s ideology of patriotism and in integrating modern military technology, which in turn has bolstered Uganda’s economy.
“The Army and the NRM have been able to build peace and security in Uganda because of many factors, including our ideology of patriotism, modern military technology and the strength of our national economy,” the President stated on his official X account.
The retirement ceremony officially concluded a broader retirement process that saw a total of 1,817 UPDF officers and militants leave service in August 2026. This group included 229 Senior Officers, 205 Junior Officers, and 1,364 militants, who retired in previous weeks from various military installations.
President Museveni expressed his deep personal appreciation for the retiring generals, noting his detailed knowledge of each officer’s contributions. “I personally know, in detail, the contribution each one has made. That is how much I appreciate the excellent work they have done; I salute them,” he remarked. He also took the opportunity to meet with the families of the retiring officers, wishing them well.
The list of retiring General Officers includes prominent figures such as Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Charles Angina, and Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, among others.
The UPDF, through its Acting Director Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, also extended its gratitude for the “distinguished and dedicated service” of the retirees, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s sovereignty and contributing to regional stability.
