Police Enforce Traffic Restrictions for 2026 Rwenzori Marathon

The Uganda Police Force has issued a notice of traffic restrictions impacting the Fort Portal-Kasese-Bwera Road, in anticipation of the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Kasese District. This highly anticipated event is expected to draw a large crowd, including thousands of participants, spectators, and international guests.

To manage the anticipated surge in traffic and ensure public safety, police will implement restrictions on vehicle movements along the main road during the marathon hours. Only authorized security and emergency vehicles will be permitted access. The police are coordinating with multiple security agencies to manage the event effectively.

The marathon features several race categories, including a 42-kilometer marathon, a 21-kilometer half-marathon, a 10-kilometer race, and a 5-kilometer fun run, attracting a diverse range of runners from Uganda and abroad. The 42.2km race, known as the Equator Marathon, will traverse scenic routes near Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenzori foothills.

Security will be heightened at the venue, with access controlled through designated points to regulate the flow of people and vehicles. This year’s marathon holds particular significance as it marks the fifth anniversary of the event and its recent attainment of World Athletics Label Road Race status, positioning it as a qualifier for major international races.

Authorities are urging all participants, spectators, and the general public to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to the traffic and safety guidelines. Commuters are advised to plan their travel arrangements in advance and consider alternative routes where possible, as the restrictions come into effect to ensure a safe and successful marathon. The event also serves as a significant platform to promote tourism in the Kasese region.
