Swiss Tourist Jailed in Bali for Violating Sacred Day of Silence

A Swiss national has received a one-year prison sentence in Bali for his actions during the island’s sacred Day of Silence, known as Nyepi. Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, 26, was arrested in March after posting a video online that depicted him walking on an empty beach during the holiday.

In the now-removed video, Zgraggen described the deserted beach as “crazy.” The footage quickly ignited public outrage on social media, leading to his apprehension.

Nyepi is a significant annual Hindu holiday where Bali observes a strict day of silence. During this period, the island comes to a complete standstill, with residents and visitors alike staying indoors. Public transport halts, the airport closes, internet services are restricted, and even electricity usage is discouraged.

The court found that Zgraggen’s actions, including the expletive-laden caption on his Instagram post, were deeply offensive to the Balinese people and their religious beliefs. “What the defendant did offended the Balinese people, hurt their faith and provoked public outrage,” the presiding judge stated.

During his trial, Zgraggen expressed regret, stating he did not fully comprehend the restrictions of Nyepi and did not intend to cause offense. He offered apologies to the Balinese community.

This incident highlights a recurring issue in Bali, where an increase in tourism has been accompanied by instances of misbehavior by some foreign visitors, including disrespecting religious sites and local customs. Authorities have recently pledged to increase scrutiny of tourists and address problematic behavior to maintain respect for Balinese culture and traditions.
