UMSC Urges Muslim Unity Amidst National Mawlid Preparations

As the Muslim community enters Rabi’ al-Awwal, the month marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has issued a strong appeal for unity. Sheikh Imran Abdu Noor Ssali, UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs, called on Muslims to approach any differences in commemorating Mawlid with knowledge, wisdom, and Islamic etiquette.

Sheikh Ssali highlighted that the common ground uniting Muslims – their adherence to the Qur’an and the Prophet’s teachings – far outweighs any disagreements. He acknowledged that scholarly differences on Mawlid observance exist but stressed they should not fracture the community.

This year’s Rabi’ al-Awwal program has been expanded into a nationwide initiative featuring Qur’an recitation, Adhan competitions, and youth engagement. However, the UMSC emphasizes that the month should also be a period for spiritual renewal and societal service.

True love for the Prophet, Sheikh Ssali explained, is demonstrated through exemplary conduct and character, not just words or celebrations. He urged Muslims to study the Seerah (the Prophet’s biography), increase prayers, and teach children about his life, recommitting to the values he embodied.

The UMSC also reiterated its call for the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, Mawlid al-Nabi, to be recognized as a national public holiday, viewing this as a step towards inclusion and national reflection rather than religious competition.

The nationwide celebrations will culminate in the Grand National Mawlid Celebration on August 25, 2026, at Gaddafi National Mosque. This event, presided over by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, aims to unite Muslim leaders, government officials, and community members. Attendees are encouraged to embody the Prophet’s mercy, honesty, patience, and noble character in their daily lives.

This year’s commemoration is also part of a broader global initiative by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation recognizing 1447 AH as the Year of Commemoration of the 1500th Anniversary of the Birth of Prophet Muhammad.
