Ex-Butaleja LC5 Chair Remanded for Shs6.5m Job Scam

Michael Higenyi Bory, the former chairperson for Butaleja District Local Government, is facing serious accusations of fraud. He was arrested and subsequently remanded to Butaleja Government Prison on Thursday.
The charges stem from allegations that Bory falsely promised job seekers employment within the district administration, collecting substantial sums of money in exchange for these non-existent positions.
Bory was reportedly apprehended after visiting the office of the current district chairperson. He had been sought by both the police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit concerning these allegations.
Appearing before Butaleja Chief Magistrate Joy Nambozo, Bory was formally charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretences. The prosecution presented evidence suggesting that between 2021 and January 2026, Bory allegedly received Shs1 million from one Makoha Evelyn, promising her a role as an enrolled nurse. A second charge indicates that in January 2024, he and other unidentified individuals purportedly obtained Shs5.5 million from Kajuri John Michael, also with the promise of securing him a similar job.
Bory pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution informed the court that investigations are ongoing and requested more time to finalize their inquiries. The court ordered that Bory remain in custody until September 1, 2026, when his bail application will be heard and the case mentioned.
