Luuka Health Centre Struggles with Power, Bed Shortages

Kiyunga Health Centre IV, the primary referral facility in Luuka District, is struggling to cope with an increasing number of patients. The facility is experiencing severe shortages of beds, essential diagnostic equipment, and a reliable power supply, which are significantly hampering its ability to provide adequate healthcare services.

The maternity ward is particularly overcrowded, with reports indicating that some mothers and their newborn babies are forced to sleep on the floor due to insufficient beds and limited space. This situation, described as against proper health practices by the officer in charge, Gideon Mukama, highlights the critical infrastructure deficit.

With an average of 150 to 200 births per month and an outpatient department serving around 3,000 patients monthly, the health centre’s capacity is stretched thin. The facility currently has only 11 beds in each of its male and female wards and a mere four beds in the children’s ward, leading to instances where female patients are admitted to the male ward when space runs out.

Beyond bed shortages, the health centre lacks crucial diagnostic tools like an X-ray machine, and its existing equipment is insufficient for the patient load. Unreliable electricity is another major concern, preventing the full utilization of the operating theatre and certain medical equipment, and creating challenges with adequate lighting during procedures.

MTN Uganda, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, has intervened by installing a solar power system and donating medical equipment, including beds and oxygen concentrators. While these contributions are a welcome relief, health workers and residents emphasize that further investment in infrastructure, equipment, and staffing is urgently needed to meet the growing healthcare demands of the district.
