Norman Blick: From Secret Bus Trips to Mentoring Uganda's Future Basketball Stars

Norman Blick’s basketball odyssey is a testament to resilience and passion, a journey that began unexpectedly. Initially drawn to football, Blick found himself captivated by basketball through school friends in Jinja. His mother’s initial reservations about sports as a distraction soon turned into pride as his name began appearing in newspapers, cementing his status as her top fan.

His talent led him from Jinja to St. Joseph’s College Ombaci and then to Kenya, where a camp in Nairobi exposed him to a higher level of the sport. He learned that basketball was more than just a game; it was a lifestyle that demanded discipline in academics, training, and personal conduct. This revelation fueled an obsession, leading him to make clandestine overnight bus trips from Nairobi to Uganda to play for the Sky Jammers, a team he grew up with, all while keeping his coaches in Kenya unaware.

These demanding journeys, though arduous, were also instrumental in elevating the Sky Jammers, transforming them from heavy losers into competitive contenders. Blick’s finest moment came in 2001 when Sky Jammers defeated the defending champions, Power, a victory he cherishes as his best. His career flourished with subsequent championships for Nkumba Marines, Power, and Warriors, alongside international stints in Qatar and Congo, spanning nearly two decades.

Beyond domestic success, Blick experienced basketball as a full-time profession in Qatar, enjoying structured support and fair compensation. However, contract issues and rule changes eventually led him back to Uganda. His path wasn’t always smooth; he faced challenges finding playing time at KCCA and JKL Dolphins, even contemplating retirement. His national team experience was a mix of pride and hardship, with Uganda often traveling in less-than-ideal conditions, contrasting sharply with opponents like Rwanda. Despite these hurdles, Uganda’s qualification for the AfroBasket in 2015 marked a significant step forward.

Blick’s playing career eventually concluded due to passport issues and feeling overlooked. He also navigated personal struggles with alcohol, finding recovery through family and church support. Now, he is channeling his energy into developing the next generation of Ugandan basketball players through his initiative, “Strong Minds, Strong Bodies Through Basketball.” He works with numerous children, providing shoes, equipment, and training, driven by the goal of seeing them succeed at national and international levels, and crucially, learning life skills that his own generation lacked.

His current focus is on building an academy and ensuring young athletes are equipped with knowledge about contracts, finances, and life beyond the court.
